テーマ Theme

Active communication in English

概要 Synopsis

This course is designed to help students become an active and competent interactionist through intensive practice in everyday conversations in-person and virtual intercultural exchange opportunities.

到達目標 Aim

This course aims to improve communicative competencies when using English and expose students to World Englishes. Upon completion of the course, students should have developed ①active communication skills in English, ②increased confidence when using English in various situations, ③the ability to speak comfortably in various group sizes, and ④stamina when communicating for longer periods. More specifically, students ⑤become familiar with asking questions, ⑥listening actively, ⑦using gestures, and ⑧maintaining conversations in English. Students also ⑨enjoy exploring a variety of digital tools that facilitate and enhance their communicative English experience.

授業形態 Class style

Students work individually, in pairs, and in small groups to practice and demonstrate their English communication skills. Activities require students to be proactive, take responsibility for their learning, exercise good time management, and communicate in English. Classes will be conducted entirely in English whether face-to-face, video conferencing, or on-demand. Students are expected to make every effort to communicate in English with their instructors and peers.

Week 5: IVE project* (1) How to get started [we meet at the PC lab 
Week 6: IVE project (2) Q&A/ Tell me about sports in Japan (Lesson 8)
Week 7: IVE project (3) Q&A/ Let’s talk about music in Japan (Lesson 9)
Week 8: IVE project (4) Q&A/ Let’s talk about good places to travel in Japan (Lesson 10)
Week 9: IVE project (5) Q&A/ Sharing various topics with overseas friends
Week 10: IVE project (6) / Sharing new findings from the virtual exchange with classmates
Week 11: IVE project (7) / Sharing interesting topics and responses through the IVE project
Week 12: IVE project (8) / Tell me about your experience through the IVE project
Week 13: Short presentations by students
Week 14: Review and preparation for the final conversation assessment
Week 15: Conversation assessment (5 min. each)

*IVE project = Intercultural virtual exchange project (5月~6月は、オンラインによる海外の大学生との交流を予定している。詳しくは授業内で説明する)

準備学習・事後学習 Preparation, review

Students are expected to prepare topics for conversation practice in class. Students should regularly review previous materials and the syllabus, check Moodle content, and complete assignments as scheduled. Students should prepare a system to organize any files, notes, and course materials. Students should expose themselves to English as much as possible and are encouraged to practice skills from class in the Language Cafe as well as use resources to maximize exposure to different types of English.

成績評価の方法と基準 Evaluation&criteria

平常点評価とする
1. 30%: Homework assignments
2. 30%: Active participation in class activities
3. 30%: IVE Projects
4. 10%: Conversation assessments

定期試験期間中の試験実施方法 Exam period

定期試験期間中には筆記試験を実施しない。No exams are required during the exam period.

課題(試験やレポート等)に対するフィードバックの方法

General classwork feedback will be given as necessary and as requested. Project and conversation assessment feedback will be given in class and scored based on the project/assessment rubrics. Answers and requested feedback will be given regarding quizzes, moodle assignments, LMS assignments, and the final assessment. Individual feedback will always be readily provided upon request.
