テーマ Theme

The theme of this course is improvement, and personal motivation. Second language study can be a lifelong pursuit. People with strong motivation to learn often continue with their studies over a lifetime, and end up with very high language proficiency.

概要 Synopsis

This course will build on existing English skills that students have to date. Emphasis will be placed on fluency, and understanding of the various different English from around the world. The class will learn through various media, such as film, video clips and projects. Moodle and various internet resources will be used extensively. Each class will have a theme, or topic. The course material, and overall plan will be on Moodle for students to see, and interact with.

Improvement of existing English skills, and increased fluency and understanding.

授業形態 Class style

The class will have a relaxed and easygoing style. The goal is to both learn and enjoy the process. Students will engage in skits, pair work, and presentations. Work will be done both in class, and on the university Moodle web page.

内容・スケジュール Contents, schedule

The schedule is topic based. Each class will have a specific topic. Topics will be decided by the teacher with input from the students. Below is an overview of the course schedule. Topics are not set in stone, and are subject to change.

Class 1: Introduction to the course and the teacher. Students and teacher will do a short self introduction talking about themselves.
Class 2: A short speech where students talk about themselves, and something they are passionate about.
Class 3 : How to use the various tools on Moodle.
Class 4: Introduction to Canada: History, culture, and the future.
Class 5: Presentation ideas. Students will ‘brainstorm’ presentation topics.
Class 6: Review of the material studied to date, and fluency exercises
Class 7: Midterm Quiz
Class 8: Climate change : Students will work in groups to talk about how this issue impacts all of us, and what are our responsibilities to the future generations. .
Class 9: Stress and mental health : Strategies for keeping a balanced healthy life. Students will give a short speech on their ideas about health and stress reduction.
Class 10: Students will prepare for their presentation.
Class 11: Students’ presentations
Class 12: Review and discussion of student presentations.
Class 13: Fluency exercises and skits.
Class 14: Review of course material
Class 15: Reflections on the course, and a quiz

準備学習・事後学習 Preparation, review

To prepare for class, students are expected to check the Moodle site, and review the material on it. New words, and phrases should be noted, and practiced. After each class, students are asked to focus on doing the assignment, and also going over the material that was taught in class. At least 1 hour for preparation before class, and 1 hour after class for review is expected.

学外授業 Outside activities

Classes will be conducted in the assigned classroom. There are no outside activities planned.

成績評価の方法と基準 Evaluation&criteria

The course evaluation is based on Moodle quizzes (20%), and homework submitted on Moodle (20%). In addition there also be presentations (20%) given in the class. The remainder of the mark will be based on a midterm quiz(20%), and a final exam(20%).

定期試験期間中の試験実施方法 Exam period

定期試験期間中には筆記試験を実施しない。No exams are required during the exam period.

課題(試験やレポート等)に対するフィードバックの方法

Written feedback will be given in Moodle, and also in class ‘ in the moment ‘.
